A topic that is getting more and more attention and that organisations have to face is the question of the social and environmental effects of their own actions, in short: how sustainable do we operate? However, the role of workplace culture in corporate sustainability and the impact it can have on the future fitness of a company often remains unclear. This study is looking for answers. An excellent workplace culture is based on three things: trust, leadership quality and lived values. In plain language, this means that employees and managers have to trust each other, that leaders lead by example and that the values that have been defined in the company are lived in daily working life by everyone.
Looking at the acute situation of climate change, one value is becoming increasingly important for organizations: sustainability. However, it must also be lived as a corporate value.
Sustainability is relevant for every company
Companies do not operate independently of their social and environmental context. Access to natural resources or trained and motivated employees can determine whether the company will continue to operate successfully in the future. Organisations must act now to address the excessively high consumption of finite resources in Switzerland, global challenges such as climate change or changing expectations of younger generations towards their employers.
Corporate Sustainability (also known as corporate social responsibility) means recognizing opportunities and challenges in connection with global sustainable development and systematically taking into account the financial as well as social and environmental impacts in corporate management.
Workplace culture as a driver of sustainability?
If sustainability is not lived as a value by both the management and the employees, it remains a lip service. This suggests that workplace culture can be a strong driver of sustainability. Experience shows that it is those companies - from small family businesses to large multinationals - with strong leaders and great visions that drive change towards sustainable development.
Great Place to Work, in cooperation with öbu - Swiss Business Council for Sustainable Development, and BHP - Brugger and Partners would like to determine in a study how strong the correlation between workplace culture and sustainability is and how this affects the future fitness of a company. This study revolves around the questions of where organisations stand regarding embedding sustainability in practice, which challenges they see for the future and whether they feel well positioned for it.
